The Procession of the Center Eye

Greetings,

I finally got around to finishing something. This is an oil painting I started working on a few months ago. It came out real good!

Description: Hooded figures carry two large _____s through town, careful to avoid the gaze of their grotesque charges.

Procession of the Center Eye, Sam Laughin, oil on canvas 2023

I’m very happy with where this painting ended up. The colors and the surrealist imagery work for me.

There is no story behind this image. It started as a sketch in my sketchbook. I just thought it was a cool image and wanted to see it in color. If anyone gets inspired to make up any backstory for this painting, put it in the comments!

Maybe I’ll make more images with this same subject. I had a few other sketchbook pages to work on…

Are they cute, or sinister? Yes.

This painting uses a few dominant colors. One is cerulean blue, which I call “Fishkiller blue” because of its strenuous warning to not let it get into the water. I’m very careful to not put any down the sink if I can help it. It’s a hassle, but makes a perfect sky blue!

This painting also uses a lot of pink. Some people think pink is a soft color. I think it can be really aggressive. The pink color enhances the uncanny look of the ______s.

The rest of the gamut. Sap green, alizarin crimson, raw sienna, cadmium yellow, pink, cerulean, and titanium white

Like I said, I don’t know what this is about. What the _____s should be called, what the plot is, what’s going on around here? Maybe that will come in time. For now it stands on its own as a cool image. Let me know what it inspires for you!

Thanks for checking out my painting.
