A Mini Obsession

Hello all, thanks for stopping by. I want to talk about a new obsession of mine. But don’t worry, it’s a very small one.

Have you ever wanted your own army? Your own squad of fighters? Here’s your chance. All you need is paint.

We got a chance to play Dungeons and Dragons recently. It was a blast. Although I only played at the table a few times due to scheduling, it has inspired me to paint miniatures. Turns out, it’s a lot of fun.

My rowdy goblin crew

Lately, with the cold and rainy weather, I’ve been staying in more. Like I said in my last post, this has been a tough time for me creatively. I don’t have the space, time, or bandwidth to do large projects. But what could be a smaller project than painting a half inch tall goblin fighter?

A project like this is easy and satisfying. You can finish a guy in a few hours. It’s fun to watch them come to life in front of you. Sometimes less is more. So many times I have bit off more than I could chew, missed deadlines, and disappointed people. No chance of that here. The creative stakes could not be lower.

Our player characters for our D&D campaign. Araxis, my half orc fighter, is on the left. Kait painted Hiski, her tiefling rogue.

I should probably talk about the minis themselves. They are printed minis made by WizKids, a label owned by Wizards of the Coast, who own the rights to D&D. They come pre primed and are ready to paint out of the box. I am using Testors model paint, and teeny tiny brushes.

My current mini count is: 10 painted, 1 unpainted. I’ll keep track and we can watch the obsession grow as I slowly drown under a mountain of tiny plastic dudes.

I’m especially proud of these two bugbears. Watch out, they’ll wipe out your whole party!

So that’s what I’ve been doing lately. Hopefully we get to use them in actual games sometime soon. The hardest challenge in all of The Forgotten Realms is scheduling. I’m almost at the point of running my own game just to get a chance to play. More on that later.

Thanks for reading. This was just a quick check in. I hope you have wonderful holidays and I will see you next year. We almost made it through 2021! Way to go guys, we are doing great.
